Zero Domestic Violence Forum Held in Guangzhou

The summary Promotion Forum of the project "Family Happiness, Zero Violence" was held in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province on July 30.

Report shows that from the beginning to the end of June this year, local Women's Legal Services Centers received a total of 161 cases of domestic violence, among which 7.8 percent of women have encountered domestic violence at least once in their lives and 94 percent of domestic violence incidents occur between husbands and wives and that over 40 percent of perpetrators are born in 1980s and 1990s.

"Family Happiness, Zero Violence" project released a case study report. The project conducted a preliminary investigation and distributed 1,177 questionnaires within the city of Guangzhou, with a 98.25% reply rate.

Survey data show that a higher incidence of domestic violence occurred in the Jiangmen area, the survey revealed that 7.8% of women had been subjected to domestic violence in a survey at least once in their lives (based on the sample size of 1,100 women,) which is 10 percent higher than in either the Heshan or Kaiping areas.

Meanwhile, the survey data shows that public awareness of domestic violence in Jiangmen is generally low, 60% of women did not realize that being ignored and being controlled economically are also forms of domestic violence.

Fortunately, more than 58.8% of women said they would use legal channels or find the relevant government departments to coordinate with in case of domestic violence, while only 10.3 percent of women said they would simply ignore their husbands to solve domestic violence.

According to the Executive Director of the project, Lin Jiachao, the project analyzed the needs of women and formed an anti-domestic violence team to provide professional help. They also set up three anti-domestic violence complaint centers. Since July 2013, the center received a total of 161 cases of domestic violence and they tracked 39 cases in depth.It was found that the relationship between the perpetrator and the victim was by marriage in the vast majority of cases, accounting for 94%.

Meanwhile, the project team found out that the perpetrators' average age is between 20 and 40 years old, with this part of the proportion reaching 80.8% and 20- to 30-year-olds had the highest proportion with 41.2%. The age distribution and proportion of victims basically corresponded to the perpetrators.

Case sampling data also showed that of the four types of domestic violence, , physical violence accounted for 77.2% of all domestic violence, with bodily injury being a common outcome.The project team tracked 39 cases in depth for cause analysis, and found that in more than 30 percent of cases involving economic issues, 34.6% of the cases involved couples communication, 22 percent of cases involved affairs.

Experts said that in the forum, the police are the only mandatory intervention force so they hope public intervention can be performed in accordance with the relevant penalties.
